How I Started my Natural Hair Care Journey

Baby me circa 1997… Look at that fro!

Growing up, I never really knew what to do with my hair, and neither did my mom for that matter. I am a mixed chick who was raised by her white mama (I love you mom) who had NO CLUE how to manage and care for curly hair (again, I love you mom). BUT she did her best, helping me find hair stylists, the good and the bad. And trust me, some were downright awful. But the truth is, I was never fully comfortable with my natural curly hair.

I was always finding the best ways to straighten and relax my curls, which ultimately damaged my hair. I went so far as to get a keratin treatment by a stylist who didn’t know how to work with curly textures, then put heat to my hair directly afterwards, causing my hair to fall out in the middle of my scalp. It took me a looong time to grow my hair back and unfortunately my curls were never the same. Because of that incident, my insecurities around my hair grew. I was afraid to go back to any salon or to experiment with different colors or styles. There was only one style for me: straight.

It wasn’t until more recently, within the past couple of years, that I started becoming more comfortable with my curls. I still straightened them, still do occasionally, but I started to learn how to live with and style my curly hair.

Now that we have the time, I have decided to do a deep dive into my natural hair. Finding clean products without damaging chemicals that will help rejuvenate, revive, and define my curls. I joke around saying that the best thing that came out of COVID-19 was my new found appreciation for my natural hair, but it’s the truth! If it weren’t for this disruption in our daily routines, I may have not have had the opportunity to give my hair the break it needed, to actually learn my hair, and unlearn my negative perception surrounding my hair.

My goal and hope throughout my hair care journey is to fall in love with my curls, learn what is right for them, and let my curls grow and thrive without feeling the need to straighten them.

Although I can’t promise to do a no heat challenge right now (I still like to wear my hair straight from time to time), I do promise to fall in love with my natural curls and hope to inspire others who found difficulty taming their natural hair to follow suit.

Welcome to my natural hair care journey!

  1. My hair is naturally curly too, but I always wore my hait straight because I did not know how to take care of my natural hair. Perms broke my hair, made my hair thin, and now that I have gone natural, I do not know what to do to it except braid it and pull it back. I am learning how to take care of my natural hait, but it is going to take me a minute to get comfortable wearing it natural. Now I don’t feel alone when it comes to taking care of my naturally curly hair. Thanks for sharing.
